Announcement:
This tutorial workshop is cancelled. However,
Dr. Peter Scott will give a presentation at SCOPE Executive Training
Room 1 (SET1) on
August 3 10:00a.m.-10:30 a.m.
Registration:
To attend this tutorial workshop, conference
participants should check the registration category "Tutorial
Workshop 2" on the conference registration form. In case there are
not enough participants, we reserve the right to cancel this
tutorial workshop.
Abstract:
Interactive multimedia is becoming ubiquitous in education and
business context. In particular it is at the heart of a
communications revolution for professional learners. In this
tutorial session we will explore a range of key technologies that
are allowing learners to leverage presence, mobility, and
interaction in wholly new ways. We will look at a series of live
case studies in shared cooperative at-a-distance learning in
educational and at-work contexts. Through the ProLEARN network all
tutorial attendees will be given live accounts with innovative
presence and telepresence demonstrators, such as FlashMeeting and
Hexagon.
The introduction of information and communication
technologies in education in general, and of Web-based
experimentation solutions in engineering education in particular,
presents many challenges. In this presentation we will discuss the
current situation according to the institutional, educational and
technological objectives. The aim is to outline a way toward
enhanced functionalities of the learning resources and expended
learning opportunities in higher education. Outline:

Centre for New Media at the Knowledge Media Institute of the
Open University. Dr Scott leads a large group of researchers
who specialise on e-learning technologies. (http://kmi.open.ac.uk/).
His research group prototypes the application of new
technologies and media to learning at all levels. Three key
threads at the moment are: telepresence; streaming media
systems; and agent research. Dr Scott has a BA (1983) and
PhD (1987) in Psychology. Before joining the Open University
in 1995, Dr Scott lectured in Psychology and Cognitive
Science at the University of Sheffield. He has a textbook in
each of these subjects. He has managed over 15 major grants,
and has over 40 research publications. He has acted as an
internet consultant to a range of multinational corporations
and is also the managing director of WebSymposia Ltd, an

Denis Gillet received the Diploma in
Electrical Engineering from the Swiss Federal Institute of
Technology in Lausanne (EPFL) in 1988, and the Ph.D. degree
in Information Systems also from the EPFL in 1995. During
1992 he was appointed as Research Fellow at the Information
Systems Laboratory of Stanford University in the United
States. He is currently Associate Professor at the Systems
Engineering Institute at EPFL, where he leads a
multi-disciplinary research group. His current research
interests include new learning technologies, sustainable
interaction and collaboration systems, as well as real-time
Internet services. Dr. Gillet¡¦s academic work has been
widely recognized for its pioneering and innovative nature.
His efforts in the e-Learning field earned him the 2001
Recognition Award for Innovations and Accomplishments in
Distance and Flexible Learning Methodologies for Engineering
Education granted by iNEER (International Network for
